On Wednesday 29th November, 23 Y10 students were welcomed into the GKN factory at Erdington. Here students learned that GKN is s a global engineering business, employing over 58,000 people over 30 countries. GKN design, manufacture and service systems and components for original equipment manufacturers around the world. Nearly every car produced will include a part designed or manufactured by GKN.
During the day students took part in activities aimed at; helping them understand the variety of options open to them after school, identifying personal strengths and weaknesses and improving transferable skills. They were also taken onto the shop floor to see the production of CV joint system, students also had the opportunity to talk to current year 3 apprentices about their qualification and why they had chosen an apprenticeship. The apprentices told them that they preferred learning on the job and that they had been to college to learn milling and other processes involved in manufacturing. They said that GKN was a good place to work and that opportunities to work abroad were also available.
