On Thursday 16th May, some of our Y10 students were chosen to be part of an initiative where students from Walsall schools are invited to visit Newnham College Cambridge.
Cambridge University is made up of 29 colleges, which are located across the city. All the colleges have their own distinct persona and ambiance making studying at Cambridge very different from most UK universities.
We travelled down by coach and arrived at Newnham College Porters Lodge, which is set in the new contemporary building opened just this year. After a welcome talk and icebreaker activity with Sophie and India our hosts for the day we had a Q&A session and tour of the college with current undergraduates. After a lovely buffet lunch, students moved to one of the lecture theatres and had a Sciences taster lecture from a PHd student on Nanoscience. We then had another lecture from the Human, Social and Political Sciences faculty, which looked at how laws are made within the European Union.
After a final session with Sophie and India it was time to board our coach and set off back to Walsall.
The day was enjoyed by both staff and students alike, listening to comments made by the students seeing what Cambridge has to offer has certainly given them food for thought. We are all looking forward to visiting Oxford in the autumn.
